Why You Need To Listen To Your Gut Feelings & Follow Your Entrepreneurial Dreams

Perception is the only thing that differs from person to person. My perception was that a life in a cubicle is hell on earth. Society’s perception was that life in a cubicle is work, it’s a job, it’s life, shut up and do it. My perception was that online courses would help me learn and grow. Society’s perception was that those courses have no accreditation therefore they’re not good enough. My perception was that I was scared, unhappy, and unfulfilled with what I was doing so it was time to find a new direction. Society’s perception was you paid for college, you have a good paying job, suck it up and you can retire at 65. My perception is that you need to listen to your gut... ...What’s your perception?

4 years ago I was just a girl with a laptop and a bad wifi connection. I had just threw thousands of dollars towards an education and a degree in Communication Design to find out that graphic design was the farthest thing from my passion.

I had a lot of debt and to avoid more bills, I stole wifi connections from local hotspots around my apartment and at local coffee shops. I didn’t even have my own router, but I was on the internet every damn day. I’d hop onto the old Google machine and start searching for things like “How do you run your own business?” and “What do you need to launch a successful blog” until my wifi connection would drop out.

Then I’d grab a notebook and endlessly brainstorm new ideas based on what I just researched about creating a business I would enjoy working for throughout my life. After a little while, I’d get discouraged, my ego-mind would start to overpower my thoughts telling me I was totally in over my head and there was no possible way that I could run a business.

So, I’d pick up my phone to start looking for ‘more fulfilling’ graphic design jobs on Linkedin or Indeed. I’d scroll past unfulfilling job, after unfulfilling job until there’d be a moment of clarity, a moment when I became stronger than my ego-mind, and understood that none of these jobs were going to satisfy me.

I knew in my gut that I was meant for more.

I was meant to do more than drop logos here, create banners there, and edit powerpoint documents until my eyes bled. I knew it in my gut, and during those moments of clarity, I’d throw my phone down and pick up my notebook to begin brainstorming again.

This cycle of clarity versus listening to my ego-mind continued for months, if not years. If it wasn’t for the day with a really good wifi connection, I probably never would have written and PUBLISHED the first blog post on SPIESFitToFight.com. As soon as that post went live, something inside of me clicked and I finally believed I could do this.

Despite that gut knowing - I was in the midst of fighting internal battles with imposter syndrome, fear, depression and I also found myself faced with financial struggles, huge life altering situations, and no time to spare.

To say growth was slow would be an understatement.

The first webinars I hosted were basically me talking 1:1 to a friend I had in college, who wanted to hear what in the hell I was doing. But nevertheless, I didn’t give up. I created mountains of freebies, courses, products, and blog posts that were total flops.

I thought it was a smart idea to invest in what the big dogs were using so I bought myself ConvertKit, Leadpages, DPD, and a whole slew of other pricey products that heard nothing but crickets from me.

They were 110% unnecessary purchases at the time (being that I didn’t have an audience yet!) and SUCH a waste of time and money. But hey, I learned my lesson and figured out how to do everything on my own without the pricey systems.

Eventually, (I’m talking like a year of trial and error later) I created a brand with a purpose. SPIES was a blog meant to raise mental health awareness and teach individuals with mental illness how to share their experience.

Enter my first successful opt-in… a free email course called Turning Wisdom Into Words (TWIW). TWIW is still my most popular opt-in and it was created over 4 years ago!

It’s had a few revisions and updates over the years, but for the most part, TWIW is one of the greatest pieces of evergreen content I’ve ever written.

The moral of this story? I Googled my way to an education in social media marketing. I taught myself how to create a website, write code, write content, optimize images and headlines for SEO, host webinars, sell products… You name it! I was determined to know more about everything.

The money I saved from only using free wifi hotspots allowed me to invest my money into much more fulfilling purchases. I enrolled in dozens of digital courses from other successful digital entrepreneurs. My friends and family thought I was crazy for investing in education that had no credit or affiliations attached to it, but I knew that if I wanted what these entrepreneurs had, I had to dedicate myself to learning their ways.

And can I just say how beneficial these digital courses were to my professional life??

Not only was I able to begin creating a successful business of my own, but I was also mastering new skill sets that landed me full time and part-time jobs which helped me to pay the bills while SPIES was growing.

Social media marketing, content marketing, and email marketing were all foreign concepts to me when I began this journey. Now, they are my bread and butter!

Forget formal education, let this be a lesson that if you really want change, if you really want to accomplish something, and you’re determined enough to figure out a way, you will master it.

I landed jobs that I felt I had zero chance of getting because of my lack of experience. My thoughts sounded something like: “You want me to be your social media specialist? But I don’t have a degree in marketing… All I know is what I’ve taught myself.”

But guess what, I always got the job! The reality of it is that on my journey to becoming an entrepreneur, I developed new skill sets that would help me grow in every aspect of my life.

Why you need to listen to your gut and follow your dreams of becoming an entrepreneur.
